One of the classic Sixties cars was Ford’s Mustang, a personal sports coupe introduced in 1964 to general acclaim and by 1966 was breaking all sales records – in fact the Mustang notched up 1,000,000 units sold that year. Ford had the sense to leave the winning formula alone for 1966, and in September that year, hertz and Peyton Cramer, Shelby’s General manager, collaborated on a 1966 Shelby GT350H as a rental car to attract potential buyers. Hertz Sports Car Club members where able to rent on for $17 a day and pay 17c a mile. Attired in black with gold Le Mans stripes, renting a Shelby GT350H was extremely popular among racing enthusiasts, many would take it to the drag strip and others would remove the engine and place it into their personal cars so they would not damage the body of the rental. After many years the Shelby GT350 became a scarce and sought after American muscle car with many multimillion dollar examples being sold under the hammer. This particular Mustang remains as a left hand drive which has been restored to replicate the GT350-Hertz in the desirable Black with Gold stripe combination and presents in stunning condition maintaining its mint day one trim with heaps of street appeal and is a blast to drive, running a mild 289 V8 Windsor, T-bar automatic gearbox and power steering not forgetting the integrated air-conditioning for that comfort weekend cruise ridding on period correct sports wheels a real head turner.
